Flatland

Flatland is a mathematical and social satire set in a two-dimensional world inhabited by geometric figures. The narrator, a Square, explains how Flatland functions: women are straight lines, workers and soldiers are triangles, professional men are squares and pentagons, while many-sided polygons and circles occupy the highest social ranks. A person’s geometric shape determines status, education, occupation, and legal treatment.

The first part describes Flatland’s rigid social hierarchy, discrimination, political control, and fear of irregularity. Through exaggerated geometric rules, the novel criticizes class prejudice, authoritarian institutions, gender inequality, and societies that treat inherited characteristics as evidence of moral worth.

In the second part, the narrator encounters worlds of different dimensions. He first dreams of Lineland, whose inhabitants can understand only one dimension and reject the possibility of movement outside their straight line. Later, a mysterious visitor from Spaceland introduces him to the third dimension. These experiences transform his understanding of reality and reveal how limited perception can prevent individuals from accepting truths beyond their own experience.

The novel combines geometry, speculative fiction, philosophy, and satire to explore perception, dimensionality, intellectual conformity, and resistance to unfamiliar ideas.
