The Lost Continent

The Lost Continent by Edgar Rice Burroughs is a science fiction adventure novel set in the distant future after the world has been divided for more than two centuries. Lieutenant Jefferson Turck, a young officer of the powerful Pan-American Navy, lives in a world where the Eastern Hemisphere has become a forbidden mystery, separated from the West by strict political boundaries. When his aero-submarine is damaged during a storm and accidentally crosses the forbidden zone, Turck and his crew are forced into an unexpected journey into the unknown lands beyond.

Arriving in Europe, Turck discovers that the once-great civilizations of the Old World have collapsed. Ancient cities have disappeared beneath wilderness, wild animals roam former human settlements, and scattered groups of primitive survivors have forgotten much of their own history. As he explores the ruins of England, encounters savage tribes, and uncovers the consequences of centuries of warfare, Turck begins to question the ideals of his own highly organized society and the destructive power of militarism.
